All of the above attachments included heavy exposure to laboratory diagnostic aspects pertaining to the particular sub-speciality. Throughout the training period in Addenbrookes the on-call rota was 1:9 involving both clinical and laboratory cover.
I got a Deanery Transfer to the East-Anglia region (Jan' 15th 2005) and started working in the Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.
I became a part-time trainee (60% Job share) from November 2007.
My training in Addenbrookes involves managing patients in all branches of haematology and I have been an active team leader and key member in both the in-patient and out-patient management of:
- Haematological Malignancies including Acute & Chronic Lymphoid and Myeloid Malignancies and Multiple Myeloma, having also enrolled patients into Phase II and Phase III Clinical Trials when available.
- Myeloproliferative Disorders. This working experience saw me treating patients with Polycythaemia Vera, Essential Thrombocytosis, Myelofibrosis and rarer myeloproliferative disorders such as Systemic Mastocytosis.
- Myelodysplastic Syndromes. This experience has seen me managing patients with myelodysplastic syndromes and Aplastic anaemia.
- General Non-Malignant Haematology including management of Haemoglobinopathies and Cytopenias.
- Thrombophilias, including Thrombophilic Disorders in Pregnancy, together with all sorts of both common and rare Bleeding Disorders.
- Blood Transfusion. I was an active key member of both the Hospital Transfusion Team and Hospital Transfusion Committee, attending and participating in the respective meetings.
- Transplant Medicine. I have been responsible for in- and out-patient care of patients undergoing both autologous and allogenic bone marrow transplants.
- Paediatric Haematology. This assignment saw me involved in managing malignant and non-malignant paediatric cases.
Specialist Registrar – Haematology (Norfolk & Norwich university Hospital)
Started in working in NNUH from September 2005 after my maternity leave (Feb'05 to Sep'05). Consultant Supervisors were Dr. Martin Auger, Dr. J Wimpris, Dr. G Turner and Dr. H Yarranton. Clinical experience gained included ward management, G.P./interdepartmental referral management; Attending 3 clinic sessions per week covering general & specialty clinics. Lab training was mainly involved in improving the morphological skills.
Specialist Registrar – Haematology (Bristol Royal Infirmary)
I worked for Dr. S Robinson and Dr. D marks. Main duties included Bone marrow Transplant Unit ward and Day-ward management. I did a 1-in-6 on-call rota covering general haematology. Clinical experience gained included both paediatric and adult Bone marrow patient management including pre and post transplant. (Allo-transplant).
Specialist Registrar – Haematology (Great Western Hospital, Swindon)

I participated actively in the weekly Multi-disciplinary & medical meetings, monthly AVON blood club meetings and S-W Regional training days. Consultant Supervisors were Dr. S Green, Dr. A Gray & Dr. N Blessings.
Specialist Registrar – Haematology (Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield).
I worked in the Myelo-proliferative disorders unit. I did 1-in-6 on-calls covering General, Coagulation & Transplant Haematology. Clinics Included General & Myelo-proliferative disorders clinics. The supervisors were Dr. J Reily and Dr. J Wright.
General Medical training My 2-year Medical rotation in the 'Royal Albert Edward Infirmary' included Cardiology, Endocrinology, and Geriatrics & Respiratory medicine. I gained valuable experience in managing acute medical emergencies. I successfully completed my MRCP at the end of my rotation and took up Senior House Officer Post in Haematology at the 'Bradford Royal Infirmary'. This post gave me an insight and raised my ambition to get into Higher Speciality Training in Haematology.
In India, I worked in Government Royapettah Hospital, Madras as a resident Post-graduate trainee. It was one of the Tertiary referral centres for the state with more than 1000 beds. This was a 3-year training programme mainly based in general medical specialities and structured in such a way that increasing responsibilities would be entrusted on successive years.
